Betty Hicks

Betty Hicks has been a resident of Washoe County for 34 years and has volunteered in her community in a variety of ways. She has represented the children in Washoe County's Family Court system over two years as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), mentored a student at Hug High School, has been a alternate member of the East Washoe Valley Citizen's Advisory Board nearly one year, and has been cooking for the homeless at Tent City in Reno since January.

Ms. Hicks became an political activist during the 2008 Presidential campaign and served as a precinct captain, delegate to the County and State conventions and was one of four finalists chosen for the National convention and was a volunteer lobbyist during the 2009 Legislature. She door knocked, called, housed volunteers, and "rallied the voters" to nearly 75% early voter turnout for her East Washoe Valley community in 2008.

Betty's resume reflects her education at University of Nevada Reno where she graduated with high distinction earning a B.A in Behavioral Psychology, a B.S. in Nutrition and a Master's in Counseling and Educational Psychology, her varied trainings, and employment. She has worked in the private sector, for the federal government, and is self employed. She believes she has a clear understanding of the issues Washoe County is facing with its budgetary crisis. Ms. Hicks says, "Action is needed now." She feels the time has come for the consolidation of duplicated services throughout the government. A streamlined government can work more efficiently and effectively without hurting the people it serves. Also, Betty wants to help create of new employment opportunities through renewable energy production, manufacturing of goods, and bringing in new industry to broaden revenue sources. Betty believes that diverse revenue sources may reduce the resident's burden of supporting their community through their property taxes. And, she wants to work with the State's legislature to enact a bill that will give authority to the counties called Home Rule. This legislation will help the counties retain generated revenues and jurisdiction from the State of Nevada.

Betty Hicks will bring her passion for living well for all as Commissioner for Washoe County District 2.
